Our oldest classes began their day listening to the book Ramadan by Hannah Eliot. We learned all about the celebration of Ramadan! In the ninth month of the year, when the crescent moon appears in the sky, it signals the start of the month-long holy time of Ramadan. This month is a time to fast, reflect, be thankful, and help others.
We listened to a story written by Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah, The Sandwich Swap. This story is about two friends who bring two different sandwiches to school each day – one hummus on pita bread, one peanut butter and jelly on sandwich bread. The girls quarrel after hurting each other’s feelings when they describe the other’s sandwich as “yucky” and “smelly.” After visiting the principal’s office, the girls reflect on their behavior and decide to swap their sandwiches. To their surprise, the swap allows them to taste and enjoy their friend’s sandwich. We provided all of our students with hummus on pita and jelly on bread, and they all agreed that they were both very good.
Our co-op mother Noha provided a wonderful art activity, making lanterns to complete this special lesson.
