¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

Our students celebrated Cinco de Mayo today. We listened to the non-fiction book The Piñata Maker. The story documents the step-by-step process of Don Ricardo (Tio Rico) and his beautiful piñatas. It showcases Tio Rico’s role in the community as an artist at the age of 77.

We learned about the colors of the Mexican flag and the celebration of the Mexican military victory at the Battle of Puebla. Cinco de Mayo has become widely celebrated in the United States as a day to honor Mexican culture. The holiday continues to be celebrated in Puebla, Mexico. Mexican Independence Day is on September 16 and is a civic holiday.

Our celebration included making maracas, dancing to mariachi music, breaking our piñata and enjoying our delicious guacamole.
