New Year’s traditions

Students at Northaven Co-operative Preschool are sitting at a table and blowing into their party horns.

Our classes listened to Shanté Keys and the New Year’s Peas, written by Gail Piernas-Davenport. This book explored the different types of foods eaten to celebrate New Year’s cross-culturally. We were excited to learn that our classmate Lucia had eaten more than twelve grapes on New Year’s – a Hispanic tradition. When the clock strikes midnight, you are to quickly eat one grape with each chime to be blessed with good luck for the year.
